Best aspect ratios for reaction videos on Shorts, TikTok, and Reels
9:16, 16:9, or 1:1? Pick the right aspect ratio for your reaction video before you record — the wrong one re-crops faces and kills engagement.
Picking the aspect ratio is the first decision you make when you start a reaction video, and it's the one that determines whether your face gets centered or chopped. Every platform displays a different aspect ratio natively. If you film at the wrong one, you either letterbox (black bars eat your engagement) or get re-cropped by the platform (faces shift off-center, captions get cut).
9:16 vertical — Shorts, TikTok, Reels
Default for any short-form vertical platform. YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Snap all display 9:16 full-bleed, so a 9:16 reaction never loses pixels. Stack the source clip on top and your reaction at the bottom — viewers' eyes are already on the lower half on mobile.
16:9 horizontal — YouTube, X
For long-form YouTube and X posts where horizontal still wins. Run side-by-side here: source on the left, your reaction on the right (or vice versa — pick once, stay consistent across the channel). 1920×1080 at 30 fps is the universal target.
1:1 square — Instagram feed, LinkedIn
Square underperforms on Reels-first feeds but holds up on Instagram's main feed and LinkedIn. Diagonal split or picture-in-picture with the reaction inset works better than equal-half stacks at 1:1 because the framing is too tight for two faces side by side.
What to set in ClipCam
- 9:16 for everything Shorts, TikTok, or Reels.
- 16:9 for full-length YouTube and X.
- 1:1 only if Instagram feed is the primary destination.
- Pick before you record. The renderer re-frames both streams to the picked ratio, so swapping mid-project means redoing the take to keep faces centered.
If you cross-post to multiple platforms, record once at 9:16 and accept letterboxing on YouTube — the conversion math favors getting native fit on Shorts/TikTok/Reels (where 80%+ of reaction-video discovery happens) over native fit on YouTube.
